Marie Chiment is a Professor and Head of Costume Design in the Department of Theater at Temple University. She holds a BA from the University of California, San Diego and an MFA from New York University. Her career spans hundreds of theater, opera, and dance productions internationally, including designs for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Santa Fe Opera, Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center. Her works have been featured in Entertainment Design, Theater Crafts International, and exhibited at Lincoln Center and Moscow’s Bakhrushin Museum.
Her research focuses on innovative costume and set design for live performance, blending technical craftsmanship with conceptual storytelling. Notable projects include Grease!, Carousel, and I Am My Own Wife, which earned her multiple awards. Her designs emphasize cross-cultural collaboration and historical authenticity, often showcased in international productions.
Award highlights include the Kevin Kline Award for Costume Design (Ace) and the Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Production (I Am My Own Wife). Her work has been celebrated in exhibitions like Curtain Call: Celebrating a Century of Women Designing for Live Performance at Lincoln Center.
As a leader in Temple’s Theater Department, she mentors emerging designers and advocates for the integration of technology in traditional stagecraft. Her creative achievements were recognized with Temple’s Faculty Creative Achievement Award in 2010.
