Marianna Ryshina-Pankova

Marianna Ryshina-Pankova is an Associate Professor and Director of Curriculum in the Department of German at Georgetown University's College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in German with concentrations in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Analysis from Georgetown University (2008). Prior to her current role, she taught German at the U.S. State Department and George Mason University, where she also served as Program Coordinator, revising curriculum requirements and establishing a Berlin-based study abroad program.

Her research focuses on second language acquisition, advanced literacy development, and curriculum integration of language and content. She applies systemic-functional grammar (Halliday) and genre theory (Martin, Christie, Hasan) to foreign language pedagogy. Key interests include thematic curriculum design, text-based instruction, and the role of grammar in communicative contexts.

As Director of Curriculum, she oversees graduate courses on German language instruction, text-based methodologies, and systemic functional linguistics. She actively supports graduate student instructors in navigating teaching challenges.
