About
Margaret Tolbert is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder and an Institute Fellow at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). Her laboratory focuses on heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry, investigating aerosols and clouds in Earth's atmosphere and planetary bodies like Mars, Venus, and Titan. She employs advanced techniques including aerosol optical levitation, mass spectrometry, and spectroscopy to study particle nucleation, phase transitions, and climate impacts.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, California Institute of Technology (1986)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Stanford Research Institute (1986-1987)
Her research explores:
- Chemical/physical properties of atmospheric particulate
- Stratospheric ozone depletion mechanisms
- Cloud nucleation and ice formation processes
- Climate impacts of tropospheric aerosols
- Haze formation in early Earth and exoplanet atmospheres
- Mars brine chemistry and potential habitability
Her publications (2020-2024) predominantly focus on planetary aerosol chemistry (Mars, Titan, early Earth), organic haze formation, ice nucleation mechanisms, and optical properties of brown carbon. Recent work emphasizes exoplanet climate implications and abiotic synthesis of organosulfur compounds.
Major scientific awards:
- CU Distinguished Professor (2010)
- NAS Member (2004)
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2005)
- AGU James B. Macelwane Medal (1993)
- NSF Young Investigator (1992)
She leads the Tolbert Research Group, funded primarily by NASA and NSF. The lab collaborates with field observation teams and modelers. She has advised over 50 graduate students and postdocs, many now in academia, national labs, and space agencies. Current projects include NASA-funded studies of Venus cloud composition and Mars brine stability.
