Marga Navarrete

Dr. Marga Navarrete is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in Translation Studies at University College London's School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS). She holds an MA in Education of Modern Languages from the Institute of Education (UK) and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Spain), having previously studied English Studies at Universidad de Sevilla. Before joining UCL, she taught Spanish and translation at Imperial College's Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication.

Dr. Navarrete's research focuses on the application of audiovisual translation (AVT) to foreign language education, particularly examining how AVT practice enhances language competence and oral skills through audio description as a didactic tool. She has developed resources and online courses such as the ClipFlair and TRADILEX projects, and has worked on aligning AVT to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Her research also addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion in language education, with specific projects tackling the BIPOC awarding gap and developing LGBTQI+ inclusive curricula.

Her scholarly work demonstrates a strong commitment to innovative language teaching methodologies that incorporate media accessibility, social justice, and inclusive practices. Dr. Navarrete is an active contributor to the field through her publications on audiovisual translation, mediation strategies, and decolonizing language education curricula.

Dr. Navarrete serves as an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lead at SELCS and is a core member of the UCL Research Culture team. She has previously served as an External Examiner at the University of Essex (2020-2023). She is also part of the steering committee for the e-expert Seminar Series in Translation and Modern Language Education, having produced seven editions to date.

As an educator, she convenes Spanish Language I and II modules and teaches in Scientific and Technical Translation and Spanish Language III courses. Her teaching philosophy integrates research findings with practical language learning approaches, emphasizing the role of audiovisual media in language acquisition.
