Marcus W. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture at Texas A&M University. He holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies in Education from the University of Texas at Austin (2017), an M.Ed. in Guidance Counseling from Texas Christian University (2010), and a B.A. in Political Science from Texas Christian University (2002).
His research focuses on examining success narratives of underdog individuals, groups, and institutions, blending academic research with the lived experiences of marginalized communities. He authored the book “B through Y: The Underdog’s Process of Seizing Opportunity, Control, and Respect” and has published in journals such as Theory & Research in Social Education, Urban Education, Educational Studies, and Race, Ethnicity and Education.
Dr. Johnson has extensive experience in public education and international outreach, including co-leading study-abroad programs in Cape Town, South Africa. His teaching and outreach emphasize practical knowledge transfer and community engagement.
