About
Professor Marco Durante heads the Biophysics Department at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt and holds a professorship at the Department of Physics, Technische Universität Darmstadt. His research spans radiation biophysics, space radiation physics, and clinical applications of ion beam therapy.
His research interests focus on how ionizing radiation affects soft matter through eight specialized areas: molecular radiobiology and imaging (studying DNA damage/repair after heavy ion exposure), stem cell differentiation and cytogenetics (examining radiation effects on brain, heart, and lung), immune system and tissue radiobiology (investigating low-dose radon exposure and immunomodulation), clinical radiobiology (researching hibernation for space missions and radiotherapy), radiobiological modeling (developing mathematical models for radiation effects), treatment planning and validation, medical physics (motion mitigation techniques), and space radiation physics (cosmic radiation effects for space missions).
Durante teaches Radiation Biophysics and Medical Physics courses at TU Darmstadt, with upcoming lectures scheduled through Summer 2025. His research group actively recruits students for BSc, MSc, PhD, and PostDoc projects related to radiation research.
