Marcella Luercio

Marcella Luercio is an attending physician in Hospital Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and a Medical Educator in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on addressing health disparities and implicit bias in medical education evaluations to promote equitable advancement of underrepresented-in-medicine (URiM) trainees. She investigates language bias in resident evaluations and advocates for competency-based feedback systems.

Research Interests: Her work bridges medical education and health equity, including analyzing biased language in performance evaluations using NLP, exploring communication barriers for Spanish-speaking families, and designing equitable evaluation systems. She also studies patient experiences with limited English proficiency.

Awards & Grants: Recipient of the Rabkin Fellowship, American Diabetes Association grant, and Boston Children’s Hospital’s Mark A. Schuster Seed Grant. Invited speaker at multiple national conferences. Selected for the 2021 Underrepresented-in-Medicine Faculty Coaching Program at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Advising & Leadership: Mentors URiM trainees, serves on the Boston Combined Residency’s Clinical Competency Committee, and advises the Diversity Council. Committed to advancing diversity through mentorship and policy reforms.

Labs/Teams: Leads initiatives in bias mitigation and equity within academic medicine, collaborating with residency programs and institutional review boards to improve evaluation practices.
