About
Marcel van Eeden (*1965) is a Dutch artist and Professor of Painting at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe since 2014. He has been serving as Rector of the institution since October 2021. Van Eeden lives and works in Karlsruhe, Zurich, and The Hague.
His artistic practice spans over 30 years, focusing on charcoal drawings inspired by pre-1965 photographs, magazines, advertisements, and postcards. His works often incorporate text elements from the same era, creating narrative series that reference Film Noir aesthetics and Graphic Novels, sometimes featuring fictional characters. This approach critically examines the authenticity of historical documents and viewer interpretation.
