Eindhoven University of TechnologyAbout
Marcel C.M. Rutten is an Assistant Professor in Cardiovascular Biomechanics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on biomechanical modeling and advanced imaging techniques for cardiovascular applications, particularly vulnerable plaque characterization and heart valve prostheses. He received his PhD from TU/e in 1995 with theses on arterial wall mechanics and atherosclerosis.
Research interests include:
- Ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging of atherosclerotic plaques
- In-vitro testing platforms for heart valve prostheses
- Hemodynamic modeling and simulation
- Integrated photonic sensors for cardiovascular monitoring
- Fluid-structure interaction in cardiovascular systems
Recent work has pioneered novel in-vitro flow models for heart valve testing (MarioHeart) and integrated photonic sensors for thermodilution monitoring. His publications demonstrate expertise spanning medical imaging, computational biomechanics, and experimental hemodynamics.
Dr. Rutten leads the Integrated Photonics based Thermodilution curve measurement project (2023-2029) and teaches courses on cardiovascular fluid mechanics, cardiac function, and medical device design.
