Marc Weller is Professor of International Law and International Constitutional Studies at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. A barrister (Middle Temple) and certified professional mediator, he served as United Nations Senior Mediation Expert and has advised on international disputes in Kosovo, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Myanmar/Burma.

Research Interests: Professor Weller specializes in public international law with emphasis on use of force, dispute settlement, self-determination, peace-making, human rights, minority rights, democratization, and power-sharing. His work focuses on constitutional design in post-conflict societies and legal frameworks for ethnopolitical conflict resolution, combining theoretical scholarship with practical field experience in active conflict zones.
Scientific Awards:
- 2014 Halsbury award (awarded by senior judges and practitioners for 'unrivalled—truly stellar' contribution to law)
- Elected Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
Advising and Grants: Secured over USD 3.5 million for major projects including the Cambridge-Carnegie project on Self-determination Disputes (USD 2 million) and Legal Tools of Peace-making project (USD 1.5 million). Served as legal advisor in UN-led negotiations for Kosovo, Sudan, Yemen (drafted peace agreement and constitutional framework), Syria (principal drafter of Geneva I Communique), and Myanmar/Burma. Advised Council of Europe, African Union, and UK Stabilization Unit on conflict resolution.
Leadership: Directed the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law (2010-2016), founded the European Centre for Minority Issues (2000-2009), and currently leads the UN-collaborated Legal Tools of Peace-making project. Established the Cambridge-Carnegie project creating a global expert network for ethnic peace-making.
