Malte Philipp Kaeding is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Surrey's Department of Politics. He previously lectured at Heidelberg University and Hong Kong Baptist University. His research focuses on emotions in international relations, identity politics, and democratization in East Asia, particularly Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao. He co-founded the Hong Kong Studies Association and directed the award-winning documentary Black Bauhinia 香港本色 on the Hong Kong localist movement.
Dr Kaeding holds a PhD from Hong Kong Baptist University and a Magister Artium from Heidelberg University. His teaching includes modules on International Political Economy, East Asian politics, and the Greater China region. At Surrey, he directs the Postgraduate Taught Programmes and launched Europe’s first Hong Kong Studies Hub.
His research explores how emotional coping mechanisms shape political agency, with a focus on Hong Kong’s resilience under Chinese authoritarianism. He has published widely on topics like red capital in Hong Kong, Taiwan’s Sunflower Movement, and Macao’s post-colonial identity. His work bridges theoretical IR frameworks with empirical studies of East Asian sociopolitical dynamics.
