Maitrayee Deka is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex, examining alternative economic systems through ethnographic study of bazaar economies and digital peer production.

Deka's research analyzes bazaar economies as distinctive systems operating alongside global capitalism. Her work explores consumer culture in informal markets, knowledge sharing in bazaar environments, and peer production in postcolonial contexts.

Publications trace the cultural and material dimensions of market exchanges in Delhi's electronics bazaars and beyond. Recent work conceptualizes bazaars as intellectual spaces and economic alternatives to capitalist frameworks.
