About
Mads Koustrup Jørgensen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Life Sciences at Aalborg University's Faculty of Engineering and Science. He is affiliated with the Bioresources and Process Engineering Center for Membrane Technology and holds a PhD and Civil Engineer degree in Chemistry. His research profile covers membrane fouling monitoring, electrocoagulation, osmotic processes, membrane bioreactors, integrated membrane processes, removal of micropollutants, and wastewater treatment.
His research interests focus on membrane technology applications in environmental and food systems. Key areas include membrane fouling characterization, electrochemical water treatment processes, and biorefinery applications of membrane filtration. His work bridges environmental engineering with food science, particularly in extracting valuable components from biomass. Recent projects demonstrate a strong emphasis on sustainable resource recovery and contaminant removal from water systems.
Dr. Jørgensen's publication record shows a consistent output since 2011, with recent work heavily focused on green biomass processing, PFAS removal technologies, and hydrogen sulfide control in sewer systems. His research demonstrates a clear trend toward circular economy applications of membrane technology, connecting wastewater treatment with resource recovery for food and industrial applications.
- Teacher of the Year 2016
Dr. Jørgensen actively supervises PhD students and participates in numerous research projects. Current projects include 'Using membrane distillation to produce metals from geothermal water' (2025-2027), 'LEAF2FOOD' for processing green leafy biomass (2025-2027), and 'CERO-MP' for cost-efficient micropollutant reduction (2023-2025). He collaborates extensively with industry partners including Novo Nordisk and participates in knowledge dissemination through conference organization, peer review, and media engagement on water quality issues.
He is actively involved with the Center for Membrane Technology and participates in collaborative networks focused on filtration research, as evidenced by his role in organizing the 20th Nordic Filtration Symposium in 2024.
