Dr Mabel Machado is a Lecturer in Culture, Media and Creative Industries (Cultural Entrepreneurship) at King’s College London since 2022. She holds a PhD from Loughborough University London (Institute for Media and Creative Industries), an MA in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, and a BA in Journalism from the University of Havana. Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher at Loughborough University’s Institute for International Management and a teaching fellow at its Media and Creative Industries program. She lectured at the University of Havana for eight years and worked as a journalist and editor in Cuban media for over a decade.
Research Interests: Social and cultural entrepreneurship, urban communication, creative economy dynamics, material culture studies, and the role of social innovation in multinational corporate contexts. Her PhD explored how entrepreneurship drives urban change in post-socialist regions like Cuba.
Teaching: Focuses on social/cultural entrepreneurship and cultural management. Designed modules at both King’s College and Loughborough University.
Recent Work: Co-organized the 2023 conference 'Exploring the Value of Creative (Higher) Education' at King’s College London. Her research bridges interdisciplinary approaches to cultural transformation and economic systems, particularly in Global South contexts.
