Lydia Sam

Dr. Lydia Sam is a Lecturer at the School of Geosciences, University of Aberdeen, specializing in Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and Glaciology. Her research spans planetary science, urban expansion modelling, and natural hazard assessment, with a focus on climate change impacts and disaster resilience.

Lydia holds an MSc and PhD, and is affiliated with the UAV UAS Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Mapping (UCEMM) and Northern Rivers Institute. She is actively involved in editorial roles for journals such as Springer Nature Applied Sciences, Remote Sensing, and Frontiers in Mars Research. Her teaching includes courses like Current Applications of GIS, Remote Sensing, and Geophysical Data Analysis.

Her recent work analyzes urban land use changes via hybrid models, GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) resilience, and crater detection on Mars using AI. She emphasizes multitemporal glacier inventories and high-resolution terrain modelling to address environmental challenges.

Lydia’s research is supported by grants from the Aberdeen Grants Academy, NERC-Funded QUADRAT, and VINNOVA Sweden’s Innovation Agency. She supervises PhD students in Geography, Geology, and Geophysics, and collaborates with institutions like Space North East and JUST Systems.
