About
Luke Fischer is an Honorary Associate in Philosophy at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. A philosopher and poet, Fischer explores the interdisciplinary connections between philosophical thinking and poetic imagination through his scholarly and creative works, with particular focus on the intersections between poetry, phenomenology, and environmental thought.
His primary research interests include philosophical poetics, aesthetics, phenomenology, hermeneutics, German romanticism and idealism, modernism, environmental philosophy, and ecopoetics. Fischer's philosophical interpretations of poetry have considered Rilke, Hölderlin, and Goethe, as well as contemporary Australian poets. His scholarly approach consistently bridges continental philosophy with literary analysis, particularly examining how poetic language reveals fundamental aspects of human experience and our relationship with the natural world.
Fischer's publications reveal a consistent interdisciplinary trajectory that moves from focused examinations of specific poets like Rilke toward broader explorations of environmental philosophy and the relationship between seasonal change and consciousness. His work demonstrates how poetic language can articulate ecological awareness and how philosophical concepts emerge through poetic expression. Many recent works focus on the intersection of ecological concerns with poetic and philosophical thought, particularly examining how seasonal cycles shape human consciousness and cultural production.
Luke Fischer is also an active curator and convener of poetry and artistic events. He regularly hosts a private Poetry and Music Salon in North Bondi and has organized numerous public events including 'Poetry and Music Salon: Do Poets Tell the Truth?' at the Sydney Writers' Festival, 'The Language of Water' in conjunction with Janet Laurence's art project, and 'Voicing the Earth: Poetry Reading and Musical Performance' as part of the interdisciplinary symposium 'The Nexus of Life: Ecological Crisis and Creative Understanding' at the University of Sydney. His collaborative work demonstrates a commitment to fostering dialogue between different artistic and intellectual disciplines.
