Lukas B Rieppel is an Associate Professor of History and Director of Science, Technology, and Society at Brown University. His work explores intersections between capitalism, imperialism, and scientific knowledge production. He holds a PhD (2012) and AM (2012) from Harvard University and a BA (2004) from McGill University.
Research interests span the history of paleontology, museums, and environmental history. Key projects include studies on Lakotan treaty lands' deep history and the entangled histories of science and capitalism. His book Assembling the Dinosaur examines how capitalism shaped 19th-century scientific spectacle.
Notable awards include the Mellon New Directions Fellowship (2023) and the Marjorie Grene Prize (2013). He has taught courses on the History of Capitalism, Science & Capitalism, and Earth Histories. Affiliations include the History of Science Society and the Organization of American Historians.
