Luis Arroyo

Dr. Luis Arroyo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science at West Virginia University (WVU), affiliated with the Eberly College of Arts & Sciences. He also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department. His academic journey includes a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Costa Rica, an M.S. in Forensic Science, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry/Forensic Track from Florida International University (FIU).

Research Interests: Dr. Arroyo specializes in forensic analytical and environmental chemistry. His work focuses on characterizing emerging drugs of abuse, pollutants, and environmental stressors, with a particular emphasis on developing rapid field analysis methods. He has pioneered the application of mass spectrometry (e.g., EC-SERS, LIBS) for identifying novel psychoactive substances and pollutants in complex matrices. His research also explores gunshot residue analysis and environmental forensics.

Advising & Training: Dr. Arroyo has instructed NIJ-funded workshops for forensic professionals, emphasizing advanced analytical techniques like mass spectrometry. His contributions to forensic education and practice are significant.

Labs & Affiliations: Previously, he served as researcher and associate director of the Forensic and Analytical Toxicology Facility (FATF) at FIU. His current work aligns with WVU’s Forensic & Investigative Science program, advancing cutting-edge methodologies in forensic chemistry and toxicology.

Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and presentations highlight his expertise, with recent work focusing on gunshot residue dynamics, fentanyl analog detection, and environmental toxin degradation.
