Louise P. Fortmann is Professor of Natural Resource Sociology and Rudy Grah Chair in Forestry and Sustainable Development at UC Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. Her research examines the intersection of gender, property rights, and natural resource management with fieldwork in northern California and southern Africa.
Research focuses include:
- Gender disparities in resource access/control
- Property rights structures and livelihood impacts
- Poverty in resource-dependent communities
- Community-based resource management
