About
Long Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., is the Russell J. Eilers Endowed Professor and Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He holds primary affiliation with the School of Medicine and leads the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Zheng completed his medical degree at Nanchang University (China) and doctorate in Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Vienna (Austria), followed by residency and fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis.
His research program focuses on hematologic disorders, particularly the pathogenesis and treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Key investigations include:
- Structural and functional analysis of ADAMTS13 protease
- Cofactor-dependent regulation of hemostasis
- Autoantibody mechanisms in immune-mediated TTP
- Development of zebrafish/murine disease models
- Neutrophil extracellular traps in thrombosis
- Biomarker discovery for thrombotic microangiopathies
Research employs cutting-edge approaches including CRISPR/Cas9, single-cell sequencing, hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, microfluidics, and intravital microscopy. Dr. Zheng leads multiple NIH/NHLBI-funded projects including Novel Therapeutics for Acquired Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and Pathogenesis of Thrombotic Microangiopathies.
He has mentored over 40 trainees including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Editorial responsibilities include associate editor roles for Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Blood VTH. Dr. Zheng serves on NIH study sections for Hemostasis, Thrombosis, and Blood Transfusion (HTBT).
