Lisa Outar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at St. John's University, affiliated with the St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She previously served as full-time faculty at St. John’s from 2006–2012. Her research focuses on Indo-Caribbean literature, feminist writing, and diaspora studies.
Education:
- B.A. in English from Princeton University
- M.A. and Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from The University of Chicago
Research Interests: Dr. Outar explores intersections of gender, migration, and identity in Caribbean contexts. Her work examines Indo-Caribbean feminisms, postcolonial narratives, and the global indentureship diaspora. She analyzes how Caribbean women’s writings engage with Christianity and diasporic cultural identities.
Publications: Her work appears in journals like Small Axe, Cultural Dynamics, and South Asian Review, and in edited volumes such as South Asian Transnationalisms (2012), Beyond Windrush (2015), and the upcoming Caribbean Literature in Transition. She co-edited a 2012 special issue on Indo-Caribbean feminisms in the Caribbean Review of Gender Studies.
Editorial Roles: She serves as Senior Editor of the Journal of West Indian Literature and is currently working on a manuscript about Christianity in Caribbean women’s writing.
