University of Prince Edward IslandAbout
Dr. Lisa Chilton serves as an Associate Professor in the History Department and Director of the Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture (ACLC) program within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island. Her scholarly work examines social identities and human relations through the lens of British Empire history, informed by her transnational family background spanning Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia, the British Isles, and Canada.
Her research integrates British Empire studies with migration patterns, revolutionary conflicts, and cultural exchange across Canadian, Global, and Atlantic World contexts. Notably, she pioneered the course "Foreign Food: Eating in the Age of Empires," merging culinary practices with imperial history analysis. This interdisciplinary approach reveals how everyday experiences like food consumption reflect broader power structures and cultural negotiations.
Dr. Chilton's publication record demonstrates consistent focus on gendered migration narratives and colonial intersections. Her award-winning 2015 article analyzes 19th-century Irish Catholic women in Quebec through religious conflict and gender politics, exemplifying her methodological commitment to recovering marginalized historical voices using archival evidence.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Canadian Historical Association article prize (2016)
As an educator, she prioritizes developing students' communication competencies—particularly written expression, which she frames as both technical skill and artistic practice. In her dual role as ACLC Director and History professor, she designs personalized academic pathways aligned with students' career goals while emphasizing critical engagement with historical power dynamics.
