Lemi Baruh

Lemi Baruh is a Senior Lecturer in Communication at the School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland, and an Affiliate of the Centre for Communication and Social Change. He also maintains an active affiliation as Associate Professor with the Department of Media and Visual Arts at Koç University in Istanbul. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication (2007).

Baruh's research program spans multiple critical domains in communication studies, with particular emphasis on privacy in digital environments, social media effects on interpersonal relationships, surveillance, and misinformation (especially in health contexts like the COVID-19 pandemic). His work frequently employs comparative approaches to understand how cultural contexts shape communication behaviors and privacy attitudes across different societies.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on privacy calculus frameworks, comparative privacy research, and the intersection of misinformation with health communication. Baruh co-founded the Social Interaction and Media Lab at Koç University and serves as a key contributor to the Comparative Privacy Research Network. He recently co-edited a special issue on 'Comparative Approaches to Studying Privacy' in Social Media + Society and is actively involved in the Disinfo Academy project (an Erasmus+ initiative) focused on information verification methods. His work has substantial implications for digital literacy programs, privacy policy development, and public health communication strategies.
