About
Leif Lia is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTNU. His research focuses on hydropower systems, spillway design, dam safety, and hydraulic engineering, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and climate adaptation. He leads projects addressing challenges in pumped storage plants, rock mechanics, and invasive species management in hydropower infrastructure.
Key areas of expertise include:
- Hydraulic modeling of surge tanks and spillways
- Environmental impact mitigation in hydropower
- Rock anchor and geotechnical analysis
- Cold climate hydraulics and ice-related challenges
- Renewable energy policy and economic analysis
Recent work highlights include studies on composite surge tanks for hydropower flexibility, 3D numerical modeling of rock anchor failures, and experimental investigations into spillway overtopping mechanisms. Lia collaborates with national and international institutions, including HydroCen, NTNU/SINTEF, and the Norwegian Environment Agency.
