Lee Ser Huay Janice Teresa

Assoc Prof Lee Ser Huay Janice Teresa is an Associate Professor at the Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Her work focuses on the intersection of environmental science, conservation, and human impacts on ecosystems, particularly within Southeast Asia.

Dr. Lee is an environmental scientist working in the areas of Conservation Biology, Land Use Change, and Agriculture. Much of her work focuses on the social and ecological consequences of human impacts on the environment especially within Southeast Asia. After having worked on a range of topics in conservation (wildlife trade, invertebrate ecology, habitat fragmentation), she now focuses on the conservation and development challenges faced in the context of commercial and small-scale agricultural expansion in the tropics.

Her research spans multiple domains including Earth Sciences & Engineering, Water & Sustainability, Climate and Environment, Food Science and Technology, and Urban Planning. She has identified critical research gaps in tropical agriculture systems, food security, sustainable certification of agro-commodities, and curbing haze in Southeast Asia. Dr. Lee emphasizes that impact-oriented research on agriculture in tropical rural landscapes and urban-rural linkages is greatly lacking in Southeast Asia despite urgent needs due to projected increases in global food demand and climate change risks.

As Principal Investigator for the Coupled Human and Natural Systems Lab, Dr. Lee leads research on the complex interactions between human activities and natural ecosystems. Her work provides valuable insights for sustainable development policies in Southeast Asia where economic growth often conflicts with environmental conservation priorities.
