About
Rémi Cardinael is a Soil Science & Agronomy Researcher at the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), working within the Department of Scientific Performance of Tropical Production and Transformation Systems. He is currently based at the University of Zimbabwe - Department of Crop Science as part of the AÏDA research unit focused on Agroecology and Sustainable Intensification of Annual Crops.
Dr. Cardinael's research focuses on the intersection of agriculture, climate change, and environmental sustainability. His expertise spans soil science, ecosystem ecology, natural resource management, and sustainable agricultural practices. He has published extensively (150 publications with over 115,000 reads and 3,982 citations) on topics including soil organic carbon dynamics, agroforestry systems, conservation agriculture, and climate-smart agricultural practices in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
His recent research has examined the biogeophysical effects of conservation agriculture, carbon sequestration potential in agroforestry systems, impacts of rainfall extremes on crop productivity, and soil organic carbon dynamics in smallholder farming systems across Africa and Southeast Asia. Dr. Cardinael's work often involves long-term field experiments and modeling approaches to assess the sustainability and climate mitigation potential of different agricultural practices.
Dr. Cardinael has received his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from the University of Montpellier. His educational background includes studies at the Paris Institute of Technology for Life, Food and Environmental Sciences where he focused on Agronomy. His PhD research examined 'Carbon storage and soil organic matter dynamics under Mediterranean and temperate agroforestry systems.'
His research has significant implications for climate change mitigation through soil carbon sequestration, sustainable intensification of agricultural systems in developing countries, and improving the resilience of farming systems to climate variability. Dr. Cardinael collaborates extensively with researchers across Africa, Europe, and other tropical regions to address challenges in sustainable agriculture and food security.
