Leah Carmichael is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia's School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and serves as the Director of Active Learning. In the latter role, she leads a five-year, $6 million campus-wide initiative to implement active learning strategies across undergraduate classrooms as part of UGA’s Quality Enhancement Plan.
Her research expertise spans International Relations, Global Studies, International Law, International Political Economy, Arctic Security, and Conflict and Food Security. She teaches specialized courses on global issues, international law, international political economy, geostrategic competition in the Arctic, and food as a weapon of war, emphasizing real-world applications of theoretical frameworks.
As Director of Active Learning, Dr. Carmichael spearheads pedagogical innovation through problem-solving exercises, collaborative group work, and reflective writing techniques that replace traditional lectures, fostering student engagement and real-time knowledge construction in line with modern educational standards.
