Dr. Lawrence Kleinman is a Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Development in the Department of Pediatrics at Rutgers RWJ Medical School. He leads the Division of Population Health, Quality, and Implementation Sciences (PopQuIS). Previously, he held roles at Case Western Reserve University as Director of the Center for Child Health and Policy and as the Frederick C Robbins Professor in Child and Adolescent Health. Dr. Kleinman’s career spans academia, entrepreneurship, and policy.
Education: BA in History from Rutgers College, MD from Wake Forest University, MPH from UCLA as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar. His research focuses on child health services, quality improvement, and integrating social determinants into healthcare delivery. Key contributions include landmark studies on pediatric tympanostomy tubes and homeless health assessments, earning AcademyHealth’s Article of the Year award.
Leadership includes pioneering the CAPQuaM consortium ($8M AHRQ-CMS CHIPRA program), developing Quality Matters, Inc., and leading research training programs like the Primary Care Research T32. He also created analytical methods to better estimate intervention impacts.
Awards: Recognized for his visionary work in child health policy and measurement. Current roles include advancing population health strategies at Rutgers and contributing to the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research.
