Laura Tillery is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Hamilton College, specializing in medieval and early modern art. She focuses on the manufacture and mobility of devotional art in northern Europe, particularly in the Baltic and Scandinavia. Her current book project, Art of the Hanse: The Mercantile Altarpiece from the Baltic Sea to the Arctic North, examines altarpiece craftsmanship along Hanse trade routes. She co-edited The Medieval Scandinavian Art Reader (2023), the first English anthology on Scandinavian art from the Vikings to the Reformation.
Education: Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania; M.A., Tufts University; B.A., McGill University. She joined Hamilton College faculty in 2021 and is on leave for 2024-25.
Research interests include medieval Scandinavian art, devotional practices, and intermedial collaboration in workshops. Teaching emphasizes object-based learning using Hamilton’s Wellin Museum collections and archival materials. Courses taught include Visual Culture of the Medieval World, Northern Renaissance Art, and Race and Racism in the Middle Ages.
Awards include the Wellin Museum Innovation Grant (2022), Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (2019–2021), and Fulbright-Germany (2015–2016). Professional affiliations include the College Art Association and Medieval Academy of America.
