Dr Laura Carmichael is a Research Fellow at the IT Innovation Centre within the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. She holds an LLB (Hons), MSc (Distinction), and PhD in Web Science. Her research focuses on data governance, privacy risk assessment methodologies, and data protection law, with particular emphasis on healthcare and social care applications.
Current projects include the PRiAM Privacy Risk Assessment project, the PETRAS Data Sharing Foundation, and the Social Data Foundation for Health and Social Care. She has contributed to EU-funded initiatives such as the Horizon Europe SYNTHEMA project and the OPTET project under FP7-ICT.
Her work spans interdisciplinary collaborations in cybersecurity risk modeling, automated risk assessment systems, and legal frameworks for data sharing. Key contributions include publications on GDPR articles, privacy requirements analysis, and socio-technical approaches to trusted research environments.
