Larry W. Sharpe is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (2012–present). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina (2012), an MSEE from North Carolina State University (1999), and a BSCE from the University of North Carolina Charlotte (1996). His research focuses on Finite Element Analysis, Computational Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Mechatronics, and Engineering Education.
Sharpe has held prior academic roles including Instructor/Undergraduate Coordinator at Penn State (2010–2012), Lecturer/Director of Undergraduate Programs at UNC Charlotte (2005–2010), and Faculty Associate at UNC Charlotte’s College of Engineering (2003–2005). His professional career includes mechanical engineering roles at Duke Energy and Progress Energy (2001–2005).
He is a licensed Professional Engineer and active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (Mechanical Engineering Committee). In 2014, he received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Pi Tau Sigma.
