Larry Rilett is a Samuel Ginn College of Engineering Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Auburn University Transportation Research Institute (AUTRI). He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Queen's University and the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on transportation systems, infrastructure safety, and technology transfer.

Rilett’s research emphasizes pedestrian safety, transportation planning, and collaboration with institutions like the U.S. Army’s Engineer Research and Development Center. He has secured grants such as a $1.4M subcontract to improve military facility safety and a $1.3M grant for pedestrian safety in Alabama’s Black Belt region.
He received the prestigious Steinberg Award (2022) for contributions to transportation education and led AUTRI to win the CUTC Technology Transfer Leadership Award (2022). Rilett actively participates in national conferences, including the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting, and hosts the Alabama Transportation Conference.
His leadership extends to directing AUTRI’s transformative research on safe, efficient mobility systems, integrating academic and industry partnerships.
