Dr. Larry Burriss is a Professor of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), affiliated with the College of Media and Entertainment. He holds academic appointments in media law and research methods. His professional roles include former Director of the School of Journalism, Dean of the College of Mass Communication, and President of the MTSU Faculty Senate.
Education: B.A. (Broadcast Journalism) and M.A. (Journalism) from The Ohio State University, M.A. (Human Relations) from the University of Oklahoma, Ph.D. (Journalism) from Ohio University, and J.D. (Concord Law School).
Research focuses on media law, national security communication, and quantitative research methodologies. Notable areas include presidential press conference analysis, NASA photography studies, legal aspects of adolescent social media use, and radio news content analysis.
Award-winning journalist with nine first-place awards in the Tennessee AP Radio Contest. Served as U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with deployments to Mali, Somalia, Bosnia, Central America, Europe, and the Pentagon. Appointed by Governor Phil Bredesen to the Tennessee Board of Regents.
