About
Dr. Larissa Born is a Research Fellow and Deputy Head of the Institute for Textile and Fiber Technologies (ITFT) at the University of Stuttgart, affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC (Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture). She holds a doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing.) with expertise in adaptive materials and architectural systems.
Her research centers on developing biologically inspired mobile systems using flexible fiber-reinforced plastics integrated with joints and actuators. Key applications include adaptive facade shading technologies like flectofin®, Flectofold, and Flexafold. This interdisciplinary work bridges materials engineering, biomimicry, and architectural design.
Dr. Born leads projects including:
- AP 5: Transition from Rod-Shaped to Surface-Like Components
- AP 23: Fluctuation-Adaptive Façade Shading with Pneumatically Actuated FRPs
She has received prestigious recognitions:
- Techtextil Innovation Award (2011)
- AVK Innovation Award - 3rd Place (2017)
- MATERIALICA Award - 2nd Place (2018)
