Lal Zimman

Lal Zimman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Their research focuses on sociocultural linguistics, trans linguistics, and the intersections of language, gender, race, and sexuality, with a particular emphasis on transgender and LGBQ communities. Zimman’s work addresses embodiment, linguistic justice, and the sociopolitical dimensions of language use.

Education: Ph.D. in Linguistics (2012, University of Colorado, Boulder); M.A. in English Linguistics (2006, San Francisco State University).

Research interests include trans linguistics as a discipline, the role of language in constructing identity, and the acoustic/perceptual analysis of voice in gender expression. Zimman advocates for trans-inclusive language policies and has written extensively on topics such as pronouns, linguistic activism, and the ethical collection of gender data in research. Their work critiques systemic inequities in trans linguistics, including racial biases and the exclusion of marginalized voices.

Zimman’s publications span books, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to language and social justice. They teach undergraduate and graduate courses on sociocultural linguistics, language and gender, and sociophonetics, and actively promote trans-affirming pedagogical practices in academia.

Advocacy and Grants: Zimman’s work bridges scholarship and activism, addressing linguistic discrimination and fostering inclusive academic environments. They co-edited Queer Excursions: Retheorizing Binaries in Language, Gender, and Sexuality (2014) and are co-authoring An Introduction to Transgender Linguistics (under contract with Wiley).
