Dr Kristen Brill is a Senior Lecturer in American History at Keele University's School of Humanities. She joined Keele in 2016 after teaching at the University of York and serving as a research fellow at the University of Virginia. Her academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Cambridge, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a BA from New York University.
Her research focuses on the social and cultural history of the 19th-century American South, particularly the interplay of gender, race, and nationalism during the Civil War era. Current research explores transatlantic connections between Britain and the Confederacy, including informal diplomatic networks and British aid societies' impact on the Confederate war effort.
Dr Brill teaches courses such as 'Violence and Power in Civil War America' and oversees the Academic Quality and Enhancement Programme for History. She actively supervises postgraduate research on antebellum and Civil War topics. Her work has been supported by institutions including the Robert H. Smith Center for Jefferson Studies and the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies.
