About
Dr Klaus Ehrmann is a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales' School of Optometry and Vision Science and co-founder/Director of Technology at nthalmic technologies in Sydney. With over 20 years of experience in ophthalmic instrumentation and vision correction research, he leads R&D efforts in novel optical designs, metrology, and vision correction devices.
His educational background includes a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from UNSW (1997), MSc in Machine Design from Cranfield University (1988), and BEng in Mechatronics from Aalen University of Applied Sciences, Germany (1986). Prior to his current roles, he held engineering R&D positions across five countries and worked for the National Physical Measurement Laboratory in Germany and Brien Holden Vision Institute.
Ehrmann's research focuses on developing innovative vision correction methodologies, with particular emphasis on contact lens metrology, ocular tissue sensitivity quantification, and optical/mechanical characterization of ophthalmic materials. His work bridges fundamental biomechanics with commercial applications in myopia management and wearable vision devices.
He has received four major scientific awards recognizing his contributions to contact lens metrology and instrumentation, including the prestigious J Lloyd Hewett Award for his biomechanical analysis of primate accommodation apparatus.
As a translational researcher, Ehrmann maintains extensive industry connections to commercialize vision correction technologies. His supervision interests include myopia axial length measurement, wearable devices, and accommodation mechanisms, with current projects on meibomian gland dysfunction treatment and air pollution effects on ocular comfort.
