Prof. Dr. Klaas Timmermans is a Senior Research Leader and head of the Estuarine & Delta Systems department at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). He holds an honorary professorship in Marine Plant Biomass at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering. His work focuses on the ecophysiology of seaweeds, their role in marine ecosystems, and sustainable applications of seaweed biomass for food, energy, and bioproducts.
Education: MSc (Biology, University of Amsterdam, 1986), PhD (Trace metal ecotoxicokinetics of chironomids, University of Amsterdam, 1991). Career highlights include over a decade at NIOZ, leading research on seaweed's response to environmental changes, and participation in Antarctic expeditions. He co-founded NIOZ's Seaweed Centre, advancing experimental marine biology.
- Research Themes: Seaweed reproduction, nutrient uptake, hydrodynamic influences, and seaweed-based biobased economy.
- Grants/Projects: Includes EFRO Seaweed Cultivation (2016–2019), FS2S Transition to Sustainable Marine Protein (2022–2026), and ValgOrize (2018–2021).
His teaching emphasizes fundamental research as a foundation for applied solutions, such as seaweed-based products and climate adaptation in delta regions.
