About
Prof. Dr. K.R. Timmermans is an Honorary Professor of Marine Plant Biomass at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a dual role as Head of the Department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS) at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). His work focuses on seaweed ecophysiology, climate change impacts, and sustainable biomass applications. Contact: k.r.timmermans@rug.nl.
Education: MSc (cum laude, 1986) and PhD (1991) in Biology from the University of Amsterdam. Research integrates biophysics, remote sensing, and mathematical modeling to study estuarine/delta systems and seaweed roles as eco-engineers.
Key Projects: Development of the SeaCoRe kelp aquaculture system, nutrient uptake studies in North Sea seaweeds, and climate resilience of marine photo-autotrophs. Collaborations span global institutions.
Teaching: Coordinates the master’s course Marine Ecosystem Services under Global Change, combining fieldwork at NIOZ facilities with theoretical frameworks. Emphasizes sustainable exploitation of marine ecosystems amid anthropogenic pressures.
