About
Kimberly Null is a researcher at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, part of the College of Science at San José State University. She conducts field-based research on water quality, focusing on nutrient runoff from agricultural activities in the Central Coast region, particularly the Monterey Bay area.
Her research explores how irrigation and fertilization impact surface and groundwater systems. She leads weekly field campaigns involving direct water sampling from farm parcels, tile drains, and groundwater pits, analyzing nutrient variability across seasons and crop rotations.
Her work aims to inform best management practices for growers and policymakers. She is supported by California Sea Grant and actively mentors graduate students, such as Jacqueline Chisholm (’21 MS Marine Science), in evaluating the influence of nutrient-enriched groundwater on surface water quality.
She advocates for integrated water management solutions, including constructed wetlands and bioreactors, when off-farm mitigation is necessary. Her passion for water protection began in the 8th grade and continues to drive her scientific inquiry.
