Kerry Gaskin is a Professor at Birmingham City University (BCU), serving as the first Professor of Congenital Cardiac Nursing in the UK since January 2024. Her career bridges clinical practice and academia, focusing on improving care for children and families with congenital heart disease (CHD).
- Education: Registered General Nurse (1992), BA (Hons) in Paediatric Nursing (Oxford Brookes University, 1996), MSc in Advanced Practice (Nursing) (BCU, 2005), PhD (Coventry University, 2017).
Kerry pioneered the first entirely online international postgraduate program in congenital cardiac nursing as a Senior Lecturer (2005) and later became an Associate Professor of Nursing. Her research focuses on mixed-methods approaches to CHD nursing, including the development of the Congenital Heart Assessment Tool (CHAT) to empower parents in identifying infant deterioration. She advocates for reducing health inequalities and improving patient safety through knowledge mobilization.
Kerry holds leadership roles in professional organizations, including Chairperson of the Congenital Cardiac Nurses Association UK, membership in the British Congenital Cardiac Association and the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (USA). She serves as Associate Editor for Evidence Based Nursing and on the editorial board of the Journal of Paramedic Practice.
