Ken Foote

Ken Foote is a Professor and Deputy Head in the Department of Geography, Sustainability, Community, and Urban Studies at the University of Connecticut. He serves as Director of the Urban and Community Studies Program at UConn’s Hartford campus. His leadership roles include heading the Geography Department since 2013 and serving as President of the National Council for Geographic Education (2006) and the American Association of Geographers (2010–2011).

His research focuses on geographic information science, cultural/historical geography, and how societies commemorate violent or tragic events. His seminal work, Shadowed Ground, explores memorialization landscapes. He champions instructional technologies and founded initiatives like the Geographer’s Craft Project, Virtual Geography Department Project, and the Geography Faculty Development Alliance (GFDA), all NSF-funded. The GFDA, now under the AAG, supports early career faculty.

He maintains offices at both Hartford (Hartford Times Building, Room 502) and Storrs (Philip E. Austin Building, Room 422) campuses.
