Keith Bates is the Chair and Professor of History at Union University. He joined the Department of History in 2004 and teaches courses on world civilizations, historiography, and religious history, including American Fundamentalism and Christianity in popular culture. He earned a Ph.D. from Kansas State University (2006), an M.A. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Union University.
- Recipient of the 2010-2011 Faculty of the Year award for teaching excellence
- Research focuses on American Protestant fundamentalism, religion and politics, and Christian imagery in popular culture
- Published works include Mainstreaming Fundamentalism (2021) and contributions to KJV 400 (2013)
He currently leads projects on American civil religion and fundamentalism. His recent edited volume Lest We Forget (2023) explores Union University’s bicentennial legacy.
