Albert Einstein College of MedicineAbout
Keisuke Ito, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Cell Biology, Medicine, and Oncology (Medical Oncology) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also serves as Director of Scientific Resources of the Stem Cell Institute. His research focuses on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology, including self-renewal, differentiation, and their roles in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and sickle cell disease. Key areas include mitochondrial metabolism, epigenetic regulation, and bone marrow microenvironment dynamics.
Dr. Ito's work integrates live imaging and single-cell approaches to study HSC fate and leukocyte behavior in disease models. He leads initiatives in metabolic control of HSCs and therapeutic strategies targeting cellular energetics. Notable contributions include discoveries on TET proteins' roles in hematopoiesis and mitochondrial NADPH-cholesterol pathways in extracellular vesicle biogenesis.
He has organized major symposia, including the Paul S. Frenette Memorial Symposium and the Einstein Stem Cell Institute Retreats. His research is supported by NIH grants focusing on HSC metabolism and LLS-funded studies on mitochondrial alterations in MDS.
Dr. Ito also directs the Single Cell Genomics Core and contributes to the NYTrainKUHR training program. His publications span high-impact journals like Nature, Cell, and Science, with a focus on translating stem cell biology into clinical therapies.
