Ke Lu

Professor Ke Lu, currently serving as President of the Liaoning Academy of Materials and a Professor at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is a globally recognized materials scientist. Former roles include Vice Governor of Liaoning Province, Director of multiple CAS institutes, and visiting professorships at institutions such as Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and City University of Hong Kong.

• Education: B.Sc. (1985) and Ph.D. (1990) in Materials Science from Nanjing University of Science & Technology and CAS, respectively.

His research focuses on nanostructured materials, particularly in synthesizing and characterizing gradient nanostructures and nano-twinned metals. Key innovations include the nano-twin strengthening methodology and surface nanocrystallization processes (SMAT/SMGT), which enhance strength without compromising ductility or conductivity. Additional work spans amorphous alloys, non-equilibrium processing, and superheating dynamics.

His scientific contributions include over 460 peer-reviewed papers, 41 patents, and 150 invited lectures, with citations exceeding 20,000. Awards include the 2020 Future Science Prize, 2019 Acta Materialia Gold Medal, 2018 DOW Distinguished Lecture, and 2011 Humboldt Research Award. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2003), German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2005), and TWAS (2004).

Lu has served on editorial boards for Science, Acta Metallurgica Sinica, and MRS Bulletin, among others. His work has been pivotal in advancing nanostructured materials for structural and functional applications.
