Hongjun Gao is a Professor and Group Leader at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Academician of both CAS and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He holds editorial roles for Applied Physics Letters and other international journals. Previously, he served as Vice President of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and chaired its Advisory Committee of Sciences. He also held leadership positions at the International Union of Vacuum Science, Technology, and Applications (IUVSTA).
His research focuses on quantum nanostructures, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), and molecular machines. Key innovations include atomic-scale manipulation of molecular rotors, reversible spin-state switching for nanorecording, and site-dependent magnetic property analysis in single molecules. His work has been highlighted in Nature Materials and Science News.
