About
Dr. Katherine Bull is an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, with a dual role as an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist in the Oxford Kidney Unit. She leads the Oxford Kidney Pathology Group and holds a BMBCh (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery), a DPhil (PhD), and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).
Her research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying kidney diseases, particularly immune-mediated glomerular disorders like lupus nephritis and IgA nephropathy. Using cutting-edge techniques such as spatial transcriptomics, gene editing, and multiomic approaches, her work aims to develop novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies. Collaborations include Heather Harrington (Mathematics Institute) for topological data analysis and the geneTIGA consortium for precision medicine.
Key achievements include defining glomerular immune distributions in lupus nephritis using the TopACT method and identifying prolidase's role in autoimmunity and T cell fate. She has received the MRC-Kidney Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship.
Dr. Bull's work also addresses translational challenges, such as immune responses in hemodialysis patients and genetic underpinnings of chronic kidney disease. She leads the Oxford Kidney Pathology Group, fostering interdisciplinary research at the intersection of nephrology, immunology, and computational biology.
