Kat Duncan

Kat Duncan is an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at the Missouri School of Journalism and serves as the Director of Innovation at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI). She leads initiatives such as the Student Innovation Competition, the flexible fellowship program, and the Innovation Lab, while producing the monthly web series Innovation in Focus. Duncan also founded the Women in Journalism Workshop and collaborates with newsrooms on tools, content, and emerging technologies.

Education:

• M.A. in Photojournalism, Boston University
• B.A. in Fine Arts with a minor in Digital Media, University of California, Irvine

Duncan’s research and professional focus centers on integrating innovation into journalism education and practice, with emphasis on mobile video, augmented reality, and interactive storytelling. Her work bridges traditional journalism with emerging technologies, fostering collaboration between academia and industry partners.

She has earned recognition for her visual journalism expertise, including a team award for Photo Editor of the Year from NPPA. Her career spans roles as a photo/video editor, producer, and trainer at institutions like the San Francisco Chronicle, where she pioneered mobile video production and mentored interns.
