Karl Lisovsky

Karl Lisovsky is a dedicated writing instructor at UCLA Writing Programs, where he has taught since 1998. He specializes in teaching English 2, 3 and 6W courses, bringing his passion for language and communication to undergraduate students.

Lisovsky's research interests focus on the study of language as a human capacity, semiotics, and the relationship between direct experience and symbolic representation. He is fascinated by how humans inhabit both a 'real world' of direct experience and a 'represented world' driven by symbols and language. His teaching philosophy emphasizes helping students find their voice while learning to communicate clearly and precisely in ways that engage readers.

As an educator, Lisovsky approaches writing instruction from the 'inside out,' teaching students to see texts as outer layers built upon core ideas and frameworks. He emphasizes the prewriting stage to help students develop ideas before focusing on grammar and mechanics, a technique he initially developed for non-native speakers but found equally beneficial for native speakers.

Lisovsky is also known for his personal approach to student feedback, believing that teacher comments should serve as 'nudges' that give students concrete direction while maintaining a positive tone. He values being a 'sounding board' for students as they develop their ideas and express personal experiences.

Beyond the classroom, Lisovsky maintains active community involvement through composting at Ocean View Farms community garden and singing with the choir at The Church in Ocean Park. He enjoys tennis, golf, cooking, and home improvement projects.
