Dr. Kari Zimmerman is Associate Professor and Chair of History at University of St. Thomas's College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD in Latin American History from Stanford University and specializes in Brazilian social history, African slavery in the Americas, and gender in the Atlantic World.
Her current research examines female entrepreneurship and property ownership in late 19th-century Rio de Janeiro (1869-1904), detailed in her forthcoming manuscript Women of Independent Means. Zimmerman teaches undergraduate courses including 'Latin America in Global Perspective' and 'History of Urban Latin America', exploring themes of democracy, economic development, and social justice.
